DRINKING IN HIS LIFE

By Dan Luehrs

Most people are trying to find a purpose for living that will give them hope in this dark and fallen world. They are looking outside of themselves to whatever might peak their interests in other religions, philosophies, and materialism to give them strength from day to day.  They have been so hurt and broken through relationships of parents, family, friends, lovers, financial loss, and just the pain of existing in this sin filled world. And unless God heals us of these many pains we also will be most miserable in our existence.

We all are carry a body of death around with us wherever we go, our body is not getting any younger but older and on its way back into the earth because of sin. Although the Bible does tell us that our spirit man is being renewed day by day. “Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16 NAS). As believers this should give us great hope of a better day when sin and death is no longer in our bodies. But how are we now to be renewed each day that will give us His life and strength to get us through the day? Does this happen just through us being saved by receiving Jesus into our heart? Yes that is the beginning, but it does not end there!

Christianity starts with salvation, but few people go on to receiving their daily bread from Jesus, as He is the bread of life and yet then they wonder why they are so weak and down trodden as a believer. Jesus said in John 5:21, “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.” True life, life eternal begins in us with salvation and not when we are born physically as we may think, but by us daily receiving the presence of Jesus as we go through our day. Some like to say, “This is my life and I will do as I wish.” But the truth of the matter is; only life can come from God because He is life and He gives it to whom He wishes.

“Jesus therefore said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. "As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me. "This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate, and died, he who eats this bread shall live forever” (John 6:53-59 NAS).

As we seek God for our daily bread each day He will feed us through the life giving power of Jesus. This may come from worshipping, reading the Bible or some other book that He may speak to you through. It may come through a conversation with a friend that God anoints with His presence to breathe life into us. God has many ways to feed us spiritually if we will just take the time to seek Him and say that we are hungry for more of Him. He will then find a way to feed us through Jesus Christ! Many times I just feel the Lord wooing me in my spirit to just sit with Him in the garden of my heart to drink in His peace and strength.

Our life is in blood both spiritually and physically and as we daily partake of Jesus we are getting an infusion of His life giving power that protects and keeps us healthy spiritually and I believe even physically. Many people get blood transfusions each year to keep them from dying and so must the church get a spiritual transfusion to receive His life on a daily basis. Let’s say you needed to have dialysis (the cleansing of the blood by a machine) three times a week to stay alive, would you do it? Of course you would! Well the same is true with your spiritual livelihood, unless you seek Him daily and get a transfusion of His life you will die a slow spiritual death and may not even know it until it is too late because you are not being connected to the vine that is supplying life to you.

Jesus said, "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it, that it may bear more fruit. "You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in Me. "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing. "If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. "By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. "Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments, and abide in His love” (John 15:1-11 NAS).

Have you ever cut off a branch from a tree and noticed how fast the leaves begin to wither? That is a picture of what happens to us when we do not stay abiding in Jesus and receiving His life giving nectar each day. The branch cannot come and go as it wishes, but must stay grafted in, to remain alive and growing. Remember what is not growing is dying and we are not fully grown until we have reached the full image of Christ. If we are not growing in His likeness we will soon digress back into a religious and sin filled lifestyle because of the vacuum that we all have within us. We are a needy people! Through salvation we are grafted into Him, but it is our responsibility to drink in the nectar of His love as we would drink water everyday. Just as God will not make us drink natural water but He does provide it for us so that we do not die physically. He also provides spiritual drink for us as we seek His face through the person of Jesus Christ and as wait in His presence. This is God’s commandment to us, to seek His face with our whole heart because He has a secret place for us to hide in Him from the enemy.

A PLACE FOR YOU

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3 NAS).

Jesus said before He died that He would prepare a place for us and when He came back from the dead He would take us with Himself so that we can be where He is. Jesus did die and rose from the grave and came back for those who were alive at that time, keeping His word to them. “Where I am, there you may be also.” Where is Jesus now?  He is sitting on the throne of heaven on high! So where does that make us sitting right now this very second? That’s right, on the throne drinking in the life of Jesus!

It is all in our viewpoint of true spiritual realities. Either we are sitting in heavenly (spiritual) places with Jesus or we are not. You might be saying to yourself that you don’t feel like you are sitting on the throne with Jesus right now, then I would ask you. Do you feel like a holy son of God? No, because you only know how many times you have failed God over and over again. But nevertheless you are a son by the blood and the position of Jesus who is sitting on the throne because He overcame sin and death in the flesh for us.

All I know is what the word has already said about the subject in Ephesians 1:20, “Which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.” We have no doubt that Jesus is already sitting on the throne with the Father because the word says it is so, just as it says we also sit with Him there. “And raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6 NAS). We do not have to wait to die to go to heaven because we already are there! Colossians 3:1 says, “If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”

As Christians we all believe that Jesus lives in our heart. So what we are saying is that Jesus is living on earth in and through us. If this be the gospel truth and it is, so is it true that we are in Him on the throne this very moment. It’s that simple my friend! You might be asking yourself what difference does it makes if you understand this or not. Everything! Revelation comes through the true knowledge of knowing Jesus Christ as it sets us free from the knowledge of sin and death. God’s truth triumphs over Satan’s deceptions and lies if we can see through them with our spiritual eyes being opened by God.

“Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him” (Colossians 3:9-10 NAS).

By us knowing and understanding the word of God we are being changed into the same image of Jesus Christ, going from glory to glory through true knowledge. Did not Jesus say that the truth would set us free? The true knowledge of who we are and where we are in Him should give us the strength to fight another day against spiritual darkness to win the battle over our mind and spirit. God wants us to wake up and realize where we are in Him and begin to reign in and over our circumstances by overcoming sin and death in the flesh from His vantage point in glory, because that is where we are seated in Him.

If we can understand by faith that all power and authority has been given to Jesus and that He dwells in us and we in Him we will begin to take authority over all the powers of darkness that we battle with. “Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall injure you” (Luke 10:19 NAS). This is who we are! We now have the power and authority of the throne of God because the throne is in us and that is where we are seated in Him. Now we must pick up the word of God as our sword and the shield of faith and fight with the knowledge of the truth and win some of these battles over fear, depression, and hopelessness that we are engaged in.

Let’s say a criminal is caught by the FBI and the man says that he does not have to comply with the laws of the land because he is above the law. Where does the authority of the FBI come from? The throne of power, the constitution of the United States stands behind the FBI agent! Just as the throne of God stands behind every believer in Jesus that proclaims His word.

THE FULLNESS OF GOD

“And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all” (Ephesians 1:22-23 NAS).

Do you realize that the church (you and me) are the fullness of God in the earth today? When we begin to see Who He is in us we will begin to reign through that knowledge of knowing that God is in us to overcome in any circumstance. We are more than conquers through Him Who loved us! Demons of darkness will flee from the church when we take our rightful place in Christ through our humility and brokenness. We have to see ourselves as God living and walking in us as we go about our day. We must be able to say with Paul, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me” (Galatians 2:20 NAS). God is in us to rule and reign through us if we will give up the reigns of our life and follow Him wherever He goes. This process of following Him will look a lot like Abrahams life, not knowing where he was going he followed the voice of the Lord into the wilderness only to find out that God was right all along.

God wants to reign and walk in and through you today! Do you realize that you are a carrier of God even as Mary was with Jesus and that you too will give birth to God? That’s right! The seed of God was planted within you when you received Jesus and will one day give birth to the likeness of God if you will overcome all that He allows in your life. Jesus wants to manifest His glory in and through you!

“Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, "I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people” (2 Corinthians 6:16 NAS).

Very clearly God has spoken of His intentions for us, to dwell in us and walk through us to be our God so that He will rule and reign upon the earth. He is going to have a people that will pay the price to become fully like Jesus so that He can fulfill His plans and purposes in the universe. The church is the glory of Christ in the earth today and one day will be throughout the entire universe even though it does not look like it now. “And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God (we are the tabernacle) is among men (mortal men), and He shall dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be among them” (Revelation 21:3 NAS). Right now where we are at in God’s time table is, if we do not know Who He is in us and walking in that revelation of Him we will not make it through what is coming to planet earth. It is time to wake up and walk in the authority that He has given us, but in order to do this we must come to Him daily and drink bountifully of His provisions to remain strong and effective for His kingdom. Let us be ready and prepared for what God wants to do through us in holiness. “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians 7:1 NAS).

YOU WILL FOLLOW

“Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered him, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward” (John 13:36 NKJV).

Most people would read into the words of Jesus and say that Peter would have to wait until he died to follow Jesus in death, but that is not what Jesus was saying at all. The afterwards that Jesus was speaking about was after His death and resurrection because it was expedient that He go away, because the Spirit of God could not be poured out until He paid the price of sin for us.

Jesus went to prepare a place for us in the spirit realm that He came from before He was a man to make us rich spiritually. He was ready to die for us so that we could be partakers with Him in God’s realm. Jesus did not die just so we could have a better life here on earth, but that we could live in and out of His realm both now and for eternity. We are spirit beings having a natural experience to learn about and how to become like Jesus Christ, because He is the fullness of God and the fullness of a man in a spirit body. It takes about eighteen years for a person to mature in their physical body, but it will take a life time for us to mature into the likeness of Jesus. I believe that our whole life has been a setup from God so that our experiences will change us into His likeness, which we fail over and over and have to retake the tests until we pass them.

We as human beings are like a vacuum that is looking to suck in something to give us life, so we look to many different things that in the end only gives us death rather than the life-giving presence of God. Jesus was more than a living being; He was and is a life-giving being that gives life to all who will come to Him. This is why most Christians feel so dry and lifeless because they do not come to Him daily and throughout their day to receive His life giving power. This is the key to remaining a strong believer! I don’t know about you, but I would not like it if someone is just hanging around me to just get some money, but if someone loves me and likes to be with me that is life giving to both of us. Jesus wants a life giving relationship with us and out of that will grow and blossom the likeness of Christ, so that we will want and long to be with Him until we are becoming like His character.

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3 NAS).

Jesus has prepared a place for us with Him in the spirit realm so that we can be with Him at all times and never have to leave His presence if we will just take the time to cultivate it. This is normal Christianity! You do not have to go somewhere to get into the presence of God, He is everywhere and all we have to do is hook up and practice His presence to receive His touch and life giving power. Jesus said, “In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2 NAS). Jesus has already prepared a place for us in His realm if we will just take the time to get there! There are many places to dwell in His realms, but we must know how to, and to enjoy them for a season and then move on to the next realm that He has for us. In the beginning God made the heavens, meaning more than one, but He only made one earth for us to experience and look how much there is that we have not yet seen? So where do you think God wants us to spend more time? We must not be like the unbelievers that cannot see nor understand spiritual realities. “Being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart” (Eph 4:18 NAS).

I can remember when I was about twenty one years old and I had everything in life that I could have dreamed of; a wife, a good paying job, two cars, a motorcycle, and my own house with a dog named Roscoe. And one day I looked in the mirror and said, “Is this all there is?” Do you see I had everything the world says you should have to be happy, but it was emptiness because I knew there was more. Then I became a spirit filled Christian and found out there were many other realms to discover in God that He has placed here so that we would not get bored, because in this lifetime we could never find all that there is in God, for it will take an eternity to do so.

Peter was given an invitation to come into these realms just as you and I have when Jesus ascended into His heavenly realm in the book of Acts. Jesus told them that they would have to be baptized in the Holy Spirit just as He was. This would be their access point into His realm when they received the Spirit. Remember when Mary Magdalene was clinging to Jesus and He told her not to? Seems kind of weird when that is what we are to do! “Jesus said to her, "Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren, and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God” (John 20:17 NAS). I believe what Jesus was saying to Mary was, “I have not yet gone into the spirit realm to the Father but have remained here with you to encourage you not to go back to your old life style, but to wait in Jerusalem until Pentecost and I will pour out the Holy Spirit upon you.” Mary was delivered from several demons of lust and by clinging to Jesus she had the power to stay free from sin because she knew that Jesus was the only one who could keep her free. But Jesus had something much better for her then His physical presence; He wanted to fill her with His power and glory! And that is just what happened on the day of Pentecost.

“And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was departing, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them; and they also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:9-11 NAS).

As far as we know from Scripture this was the first time that Jesus ascended and went to the Father so that He could pour out Himself to anyone that would receive Him. Now we can cling to Him and get as much of Him that we want everyday. Are you clinging to Him with everything that is within you today, is He your everything, or has He become like an old fling that was in your past? He must become your very life!

“And when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent, rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance” (Acts 2:1-5 NAS).

Pentecost was the day that Jesus came into His people through the presence of the Holy Spirit. Now Jesus can be in all believers spiritually just as He was physically to one individual when He lived on earth. How great is that? God wants us to learn how to draw life from Him as you would a sunny day so that we will receive His strength, peace, wisdom, hope, and glory. This is what true Christianity is, LIFE!
